Looking for ways to use a communication system with a young child throughout the day? Everyday activities are great environments to plan for meaningful communication opportunities. Pair these suggested supports with pictures, a recordable device or app and you have a great activity to encourage communication between family members!
Natural Routines... Waking Up
Record “Mom, Dad I’m up! Come and get me!” on a single message device. Attach it to the bed side/frame within a child’s reach to use when s/he wakes up in the morning.
Provide a communication board with pictures of various daily activities so the child can choose the activity to start the day with; such as Breakfast, Brush Teeth, Get Dressed, etc. Use a veltex board, picture frame mat or album to display picture choices.
Provide the same options using a multi-message device or app (e.g. My Choice Board) with embedded messages under each picture: “Let’s eat, I’m hungry,” “I want to get dressed,” etc.
A communication board with pictures in the bathroom can be used to make choices such as whether to wash face and hands first, brush teeth, or comb hair.
